Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) Report
SNA encourages all homeowners to consult our Historic Summerville Guidelines before making any changes to the outside of your house. Guidelines are available on the web at: www.summervilleaugusta.org. Click on “Historic Guidelines” in the center box on the home page. It will take a few minutes to download but it is worth your while to be sure of the regulations that help ensure a more pleasant community for us all.
Recent events at an HPC meeting in the Municipal Building downtown, brought up the recurring problem with people not referring to the “Historic Guidelines” before erecting fences, carports and other structures. An example of one violation was the construction of a metal carport which was not approved by HPC. HPC has directed the owner to remove the structure. As with any proposed structure, the homeowners must first schedule a hearing with HPC. At your scheduled hearing you’ll be asked to present a drawing, discuss dimensions and planned material of the proposed structure. HPC will vote to approve or disapprove your plan. If approved, one can then apply for a permit to build, which is issued by the city of Augusta.
